Reclaiming space for our native species
Plants introduced to our area from afar cannot be eaten or utilized by many of our insect species. Many butterflies and native pollinating bees require specific plant species to reproduce. Collapsing insect populations cause a domino effect that puts pressure on entire ecosystems, including our much loved native and migratory birds. Harvesting these invasive plants for paper is a small way for me to benefit nature, and to spread awareness about the plight of declining biodiversity.
The Process
Harvesting plant fibers
Harmful introduced plants are everywhere, and include kudzu, multiflora rose, asian bittersweet, and this showy grass miscanthus.
Boiling and beating
Plant matter is boiled and pulverized into a pulp.
Blending
Plant pulp is then blended into a fine slurry.
Mould and deckle
Plant slurry is pulled into a screen and removed to dry.
